Folk Pop Star Phương Mỹ Chi’s New Video Brings Khmer Culture to Vietnamese Pop
The song tells a romantic story, but Chi deliberately lets Khmer culture shine through the lyrics, costumes and musical arrangement, creating a rare blend of love and heritage.
To keep the portrayal authentic, she consulted professors from the College of Southern Khmer Language‑Culture‑Arts and Humanity at Trà Vinh University.
The video includes a Khmer‑language line “បងមានស្រឡាញ់អូនទេ?” and shows Khmer‑specific scenes such as boat races, cá kèo, mắm me, traditional dance, wedding customs and traditional clothing.
Filming took place at well‑known Khmer community sites in Trà Vinh and An Giang provinces, including Ao Bà Om, Cỏ Thum Pagoda, Vàm Ray Pagoda, Trà Sư Cajuput Forest and palmyra palm fields.
Khmer is one of Southeast Asia’s oldest ethnic groups. Vietnam’s Khmer population exceeds one million, with more than 60% living in Sóc Trăng and Trà Vinh provinces.
By weaving genuine Khmer elements into a mainstream pop video, Chi offers a rare glimpse of a minority culture and highlights Vietnam’s cultural diversity.
