Why More Foreign Patients Choose Vietnam for Advanced, Affordable Care
Vietnamese hospitals now master advanced specialized techniques such as robotic surgery, organ transplantation, and minimally invasive interventions. These capabilities allow them to treat complex conditions that previously required travel abroad. The growing expertise is attracting international patients for both consultation and treatment.
Donald, a 67‑year‑old Canadian, found his prostate‑specific antigen level had risen to 20 ng/ml during a routine check. He was told an MRI in Canada would take about six months, so he decided to travel to Vietnam. There he underwent a robotic surgery to remove his prostate tumor.
Bach Mai Hospital reported 3,871 visits by international patients between 1 January 2024 and 10 October 2026, including 2,721 out‑patient, 65 day‑treatment and 1,078 in‑patient cases, showing rapid growth in medical tourism. The hospital assigns multilingual staff to assist foreign patients. It also offers the Bach Mai Care app in Vietnamese, English, Chinese and Japanese to help patients register and access information.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vo Thi Ngoc Thuy cited a survey of over 700 international patients, revealing that the main reasons they choose Vietnam are reasonable treatment costs, high quality care, and rapid access to services.
The combination of cutting‑edge techniques, affordable prices and fast service is turning Vietnam into a preferred destination for medical tourists. This trend may influence where people seek treatment in the future.
