Vietnam Moves to Post‑Quantum Encryption as AI and Quantum Threats Grow
Lieutenant General Dang Vu Son warned that super‑intelligent AI and quantum computers threaten cryptographic security. He said the mix of quantum processing and AI could break classic encryption sooner, endangering blockchain and digital signatures.
At a workshop, the Government Cipher Committee announced three draft national post‑quantum cryptography standards: the Modified HB‑PQSign hash‑based digital signature algorithm, the Module‑Lattice‑Based Key‑Encapsulation Mechanism (ML‑KEM), and the Module‑Lattice‑Based Digital Signature Algorithm (ML‑DSA). These drafts are now publicly available for expert feedback on the Committee’s official portals.
Lieutenant General Dang Vu Son praised the drafts for selectively adopting international standards, ensuring interoperability with ISO and NIST while also using Vietnamese research to demonstrate national cryptographic mastery. Dr. Tony Tran warned that quantum codebreaking threatens payment systems, and Nguyen Quoc Toan said Project 125 will require the State Bank of Vietnam to create a coordinated roadmap so the transition does not disrupt banking services.
The rise of super‑intelligent AI and quantum computers makes post‑quantum cryptography essential for Vietnam’s security and financial stability. Moving to the new standards now aims to protect data and keep everyday digital services running smoothly.
