Hanoi’s Drive to Lead Vietnam’s Tourism: Economic Boost and Cultural Preservation
The municipal People’s Committee’s Plan No. 406/KH‑UBND for 2026‑2030 states that Hanoi aims to become one of Vietnam’s three major tourism growth poles, together with Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. The plan targets 47‑50.5 million tourist arrivals by 2030, including 13‑15 million international visitors.
The same plan projects tourism revenue of 295‑340 trillion VND (about 11.4‑13.2 billion USD), which would represent roughly 7.5‑8 % of the city’s gross regional domestic product. This revenue share highlights the sector’s potential to boost the local economy.
To support the expected influx, Hanoi intends to add at least 10,000 four‑ and five‑star hotel rooms. It also plans to develop three sites as national tourist areas and to upgrade at least three craft or ancient villages into high‑quality destinations.
Officials stress that sustainable growth needs better planning, distinctive products, consistent service quality and a strong destination brand. These measures aim to keep tourism benefits long‑term.
If the targets are met, Hanoi could see more jobs, higher incomes and a preserved cultural heritage. The city’s tourism push therefore matters not only for economic numbers but also for protecting the identity that makes Hanoi unique.
