Postponed Asian Cup threatens Vietnam coach Kim Sang Sik’s job

Postponed Asian Cup threatens Vietnam coach Kim Sang Sik’s job
The Asian Football Confederation announced on November 3 that the tournament will now run from December 23 2027 to January 21 2028. This postponement pushes the competition almost a year later than originally planned.
Kim Sang Sik’s contract with the Vietnam Football Federation expires in February 2027, only a few months before the rescheduled Asian Cup begins. If a new agreement is not reached, the coach could leave before the team takes part in the tournament.
The coach was hired in May 2024 on a two‑year deal that contains an automatic extension clause tied to specific sporting objectives. During his tenure, Vietnam achieved a record 27‑match unbeaten run, which makes an extension appear likely.
The VFF’s 10th Congress is set for January 2027, when a new leadership team for the 2026‑2030 term will be chosen. Decisions made at the congress could affect whether Kim’s contract is renewed, adding another layer of uncertainty.
Because the Asian Cup now starts after Kim’s contract ends, the postponement creates a risky gap that may leave Vietnam without its successful coach at a crucial moment. The outcome will depend on contract talks and the choices of the incoming VFF leadership.
