Lessons from Catherine Breed’s 111‑Day California Coast Swim

Lessons from Catherine Breed’s 111‑Day California Coast Swim

Lessons from Catherine Breed’s 111‑Day California Coast Swim
During the swim she stayed 5‑8 km offshore and swam several hours each day. She covered an average of 16.6 km per day and took 18 rest days when the weather was bad. To keep her energy, she ate more than 6,000 calories a day. A crew on the 16‑m boat Catalyst helped her, recorded her GPS position, and did not let her touch the boat while swimming.
Strong currents, El Niño weather, sharks and polluted water near the U.S.–Mexico border made the trip hard. She sometimes swam backward to use the currents and moved the finish point five kilometres offshore to avoid sewage runoff. The crew also pulled her onto the boat when sharks appeared.
Breed paused her medical‑device job, trained hard, and founded the Sea Dreamers nonprofit. She used the swim to show plastic waste and sewage problems, teaching us that careful planning, safety tactics and caring for the ocean are key lessons from her feat.
