Moon Phase Today: What the Moon Looks Like
On August 8, the Moon is in its Waning Crescent phase, with 26% of it visible.
You can see the Aristarchus Plateau and Kepler Crater without help. Binoculars or a telescope will show you the Grimaldi Basin and more.
The next Full Moon is on August 28.
The Moon changes as it goes around Earth, taking about 29.5 days. The Sun, Earth, and Moon move, so we see different parts of the Moon lit up. We see a crescent, half Moon, Full Moon, and then it starts again.
There are eight Moon phases:
New Moon: The Moon is between Earth and the sun, so we don't see it.
Waxing Crescent: A small part of the Moon is lit on the right.
First Quarter: Half of the Moon is lit on the right. It looks like a half-Moon.
Waxing Gibbous: More than half of the Moon is lit, but not all.
Full Moon: The whole Moon is lit and visible.
Waning Gibbous: The Moon starts to lose light on the right.
Third Quarter: Half of the Moon is lit, but on the left side.
Waning Crescent: A small part of the Moon is lit before it goes dark.
