Apple says the increase is due to the global memory crisis – a shortage of the memory chips that smartphones need to run apps and store data.

When memory chips become scarce, manufacturers have to pay more to buy them. Those higher costs are then added to the retail price of the phone.

For shoppers, the higher price means they will need to spend more money now, or wait for future models that might be cheaper if the chip shortage eases.
