Helping Scotland's Saltmarsh

Scotland's saltmarsh is being fixed.

This is change.

Change means something looks very different now.

Re-engineered means something was changed from its original plan.

To bring something back means to make it like it was before.

To reappear means to come back after being gone for a while.

What three kinds of animals can we see in the saltmarsh?

We are looking at how the environment is changing.

In an area near old coal mines and factories, something new is happening.

Three years ago, people changed this area to make it a natural wetland again.

Allison Leonard works for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

People let the sea water back into the area. Soon, special plants started growing again. Now, it's all saltmarsh. We let nature take over, and animals started coming back. Birds use the area when the tide is high, and we see deer and hares in the spring.

This wetland is also helping us fight against bad things we put into the air.

The plants in the marsh absorb bad gases and store them in the mud.

Lucy Miller is a research technician at the University of St Andrews.

The soil here is very rich compared to other areas. We will take some of this soil back to the lab to study it and see how much carbon is in it.

Letting the sea take back this land shows us how nature can help with the climate crisis.
