Vietnamese Couple's Love Story in the Australian Outback

Minh Phuong and Viet Anh met in Melbourne four years ago. They were studying abroad. Viet Anh worked as a data specialist and applied for permanent residency. Phuong was a student with an unpaid internship and a part-time job. She said, 'Watching him move forward made me want to keep up.'

In 2024, Phuong applied for a teaching job in Mulan, a small Aboriginal community in Western Australia. The job paid more than her job in Melbourne and helped her career and visa.

Viet Anh visited Phuong in Mulan in 2025.

When Phuong told Viet Anh she was moving to the desert, he was surprised. But he supported her decision. He said, 'We are young, and this is the time to invest in our future. We can overcome the distance.'

Together, they prepared for Phuong's move. Phuong collected donations like toys and clothes for the children in Mulan. Viet Anh helped her pack the donations every evening.

In October 2024, Viet Anh drove Phuong to the airport with nearly 100 kg of supplies. Phuong was sad to leave, but she was brave for their future.

Phuong's first days in Mulan were tough. The community was small, and the weather was hot. There were many flies, and the roads were muddy.

To make Viet Anh less worried, Phuong always carried water and a two-way radio. She texted him before crossing the desert.

Mulan is like an oasis in the desert. It has a school and a grocery store.

Viet Anh wanted to see Phuong's life in Mulan. In April 2025, he traveled to the Outback.

The journey was hard. There were heavy rains, and flights were canceled. Viet Anh paid extra to reschedule his flight.

Phuong picked Viet Anh up from the airfield. Their car got stuck in the mud, but they were happy to be together.

During his visit, Viet Anh saw a new side of Phuong. She was patient with her students and helped them with their problems.

Viet Anh taught computer skills to the local youth.

In the evenings, the couple spent time together. They sat by the fire, shared food, and watched the stars.
