Hyunwoo’s Knife Chase Highlights Growing Safety Concerns on Jeju Island

In February 2026, Seong Hyunwoo – a former Produce 101 Season 2 contestant and member of the group LIMITLESS – said he was chased on Jeju Island by an intoxicated man who was carrying a sashimi knife whose handle appeared to be tied to the man’s wrist.

Hyunwoo explained that the incident began after he finished dinner at a quiet kalguksu restaurant. The drunk customer shouted at a foreign waitress, and when Hyunwoo politely asked everyone to keep quiet, the man became even more aggressive.

According to Hyunwoo, the man later called him outside, asked “Are you good at fighting?” and then showed the knife. The man allegedly chased Hyunwoo through the streets while still holding the weapon, forcing Hyunwoo to hide behind a stone wall before he managed to run back to his guesthouse.

After reaching safety, Hyunwoo called the police. Authorities later told him they had found the suspect nearby still holding the knife, and months after the incident he received an official notice that the man had been arrested and charged with intimidation using special objects.

The story resurfaced at a time when Jeju Island is facing renewed public attention on crime and safety. In August 2026, a scandal involving covered‑up crimes and missing‑person cases on the island triggered a nationwide investigation into the local police authority.

Hyunwoo’s frightening experience matters because it turns a single personal ordeal into a clear example of the broader safety concerns that tourists and residents are discussing on Jeju, prompting calls for better policing and crime‑prevention measures.
