How a Mis‑set Network Clock Sparked Telstra’s July Outage

On 8 July 2026, a fault in Telstra’s mobile network stopped about 45 percent of all voice calls and data sessions across the country.

The problem started at 2:50 am when technicians replaced a faulty power‑supply unit. The replacement unintentionally reset the date on a GPS timing card to the year 2006. This wrong date broke the Network Time Protocol (NTP) that synchronises the whole mobile system, causing the error to spread through the network.

Normally, alarms would have warned staff as soon as the NTP error appeared, but the alarms were only watched during business hours and only a limited number of people were on duty. Because there were no experienced engineers on shift, it took several hours before the root cause was identified.

The independent review by Technology Audit Partners (TAP) noted that Telstra had been warned for months by government agencies about weaknesses in its timing system. The report said the outage was worsened by unclear ownership of NTP, a lack of visibility of the replacement work, and a poor understanding of the early‑stage alarms.

Telstra chief executive Vicki Brady accepted the TAP findings and announced that the company is moving resources to strengthen its timing infrastructure and to treat NTP as a high‑risk, critical function.
