Desert Pea’s Dormant Seeds and Scarification Spark a Rare Super Bloom

This spring the north of South Australia and the border region of New South Wales were awash with Sturt’s desert peas. Rainfall reached three to four times the usual total – the heaviest the area has seen since 1974 – and triggered a spectacular ‘super bloom’ across the Flinders Ranges and surrounding paddocks.

Sturt’s desert pea seeds can remain dormant for many years in the arid soil. According to senior horticulture curator Matt Coulter of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, the seeds only awaken when enough moisture penetrates the ground, allowing germination after a rare heavy rain event.

Coulter also notes that, in cultivation, each seed is examined under a microscope and given a small nick – a process called scarification. This tiny cut breaks the seed’s hard coat, so the embryo can take up water and sprout within two to three days.

For the seedlings to thrive, the soil must be well‑aerated. The plants enjoy moisture, but they cannot tolerate waterlogged roots; good airflow lets excess water drain away, keeping the root zone dry enough for healthy growth.

While about 99 % of the flowers are the classic red with a black centre, this year’s bloom revealed unusual pink, white and purple specimens. The colour variations stand out sharply against the dominant red‑black patches, offering a rare visual treat for observers.
