Edmonton Captain to be Honored in New Heritage Minute

Production took place at CFB Wainwright to tell the story of Capt. Jonathan Snyder

The military base is being used for a new Heritage Minute about Capt. Jonathan Snyder and other soldiers who served in Afghanistan

Snyder was in the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton, and went on three overseas missions

Historica Canada filmed the one-minute video at CFB Wainwright, which is about 200 kilometers from Edmonton

The video tells the story of what Snyder did during a 2008 Taliban attack in Afghanistan, where he helped save many lives

The president of Historica Canada said the video is a tribute to the 40,000 Canadians who served in Afghanistan and the 158 who did not come back

They chose to tell Snyder’s story because of the leadership and courage he showed during his time in Afghanistan

Snyder learned to speak Pashto and worked to build relationships with the local people

The scene shows an ambush where Snyder and his team were under attack from all sides

The director said there was no help available, so the soldiers had to find a way out on their own

The soldiers were caught off guard and were outnumbered

They thought they were just going for a walk, but it turned into a surprise attack

Snyder was able to lead the troops and get them out of the area

Three days after the ambush, Snyder died on a night patrol

He fell into a hidden well and drowned, despite efforts to save him

To make the scene look real, Historica Canada worked with people who served in Afghanistan

They made sure the uniforms and equipment were correct to make the scene authentic

The goal is for people who knew Snyder to say the video is a true representation of him

The actor who plays Snyder said it was a big responsibility to play a real person

He wanted to do a good job and show who Snyder really was

There is a lot of pressure to get it right and be honest

The actor talked to Snyder’s friends to learn more about him

Another actor said the people who served in Afghanistan on set helped him understand his role

It is humbling to know that this is just a movie, but it is a tribute to those who serve
