Prairie Farmers File Over 4,000 Insurance Claims Due to Storms

A stormy July in the Prairie provinces led to over 1 million acres of land being insured, says the Canadian Crop Hail Association.

The association looked into over 4,000 claims related to July storms.

The association warns that more losses could happen before harvest if there are more hail or wind storms.

July 3-10 was very bad for Saskatchewan crop producers.

Rodney Schoettler said one million acres were damaged that week, the most in his 39-year career.

Some communities hit hard were Canora, Lloydminster, and Maple Creek.

Flax and soybeans were damaged in Saskatchewan, while corn and canola were damaged in Alberta.

Many Albertan communities had storms in July. Westlock, Goodridge, and Leduc were examples.

Manitoba had the fewest communities with crop insurance claims.

Lentil, oat, and pea plants were damaged in Manitoba.

The association encourages producers to file insurance claims soon if they haven't already.
