Crown Calls Craig Fox’s Killing of Lee Bearsears ‘Vigilante Justice’

In October 2023, 29‑year‑old Craig Fox shot Lee Bearsears in the back of the head with a sawed‑off rifle and left the body in a field on Poundmaker Cree Nation. Fox was under the influence of crystal meth and alcohol at the time.

Later, a jury in Battleford Court of King's Bench found Fox guilty of second‑degree murder. The Crown asked that he be denied parole for 15 to 20 years, while the defence argued for the minimum ten‑year period allowed by law.

Crown prosecutor Oryn Holm told the court that Fox had carried out “vigilante justice” and acted as “judge, jury and executioner.” Holm noted that Fox had learned Bearsears was charged with a sexual‑assault allegation and used that information as a motive for the killing.

By labeling the act as vigilante justice, the Crown highlighted that Fox took the law into his own hands, denied Bearsears a trial, and killed him without any chance to defend himself. This framing supports a longer parole‑ineligibility period because the crime is presented as an unlawful, self‑appointed punishment rather than a spontaneous act.

The case shows how prosecutors can shape public perception and sentencing by emphasizing the offender’s role as a self‑appointed enforcer, especially when the victim was already facing serious charges.
