Bill Bailey Shows How Music Bridges Cultures and Languages

During his Australian tour, Bailey chatted with Megan Burslem on ABC Classic Breakfast. He talked about the moments that have convinced him music can cross borders, from the highlands of Vietnam to the grand organ of the Royal Albert Hall.

In Vietnam’s remote Sapa Valley, Bailey played the khèn with locals, using two translators and a phone keyboard app to add chords.

He explained that the khèn is a bamboo wind instrument that sounds like a haunting bagpipe. One local musician spoke only a regional dialect, so the pair relied on translators and the phone app to keep the music flowing. After the session, Bailey said, "music has this incredible transformative power to connect people across nations, cultures and languages".

Bailey also recalled performing Leroy Anderson’s The Typewriter at the 2025 Last Night of the Proms. He rehearsed the piece late at night, practiced a foot‑pedal bell as a backup, and even planned for the typewriter keys to jam, turning a potential mishap into a controlled part of the show.

Both anecdotes underline a clear lesson: music can act as a universal language, helping people communicate even when words fail. For English learners, the stories illustrate how rhythm, melody and shared experience can create connections that go beyond spoken language.
