More than 280,000 people voted in last year’s ABC Radio National Top 100 Books of the 21st Century, and 26 Australian authors made the final list, highlighting how public participation can shape national literary recognition.

The debate matters because these lists influence what shelves stock, what schools teach, and what readers pick up. They can drive sales and spark cultural conversation, but they also risk reducing diverse voices to a single ranking.
