Why Food Scares Abroad Still Matter for Singapore Consumers

A recent scandal in China, where cabbages were treated with formalin, quickly caught Singapore’s attention.

Traders in Hebei, China, illegally applied formalin – a known carcinogen – to extend the shelf‑life of cabbages. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) tested the imported vegetables and reported no trace of formalin contamination.

Singapore imports more than 90 % of its food and sources supplies from over 180 countries and regions. This geographic diversification protects the nation from disruptions, but it also means the food chain passes through many different farming systems, regulations and safety cultures.

To guard against hidden hazards, the SFA follows a “farm‑to‑fork” monitoring system. Between April 2024 and March 2025 it examined more than 6,000 food samples from retail outlets. The agency says major food‑borne illness cases fell from 22.8 per 100,000 people in 2024 to 16.8 per 100,000 in 2025.

Because most of Singapore’s food arrives from abroad, any safety breach overseas can become a local risk. The country therefore relies on multiple layers of protection – strict supplier accreditation, extensive testing, international intelligence sharing and rapid traceability – to detect problems before they reach consumers.
