Barry Melrose: From Player to Iconic Hockey Personality

Barry Melrose entered professional hockey in 1976 with the Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association. When the WHA folded, he moved to the NHL, playing for Winnipeg, Toronto and Detroit until he retired after the 1985‑86 season, finishing with 10 goals, 33 points and 728 penalty minutes in 300 regular‑season games.

He switched to coaching and guided the Adirondack Red Wings to the AHL Calder Cup in 1992. The following year the Los Angeles Kings hired him; in his first season he led a team that included Wayne Gretzky to the 1993 Stanley Cup final, though they lost to Montreal. Gretzky later said Melrose was “bigger than any team.” Melrose’s record with the Kings was 79‑101‑29 before he was dismissed midway through the 1994‑95 campaign.

In 1996 ESPN brought Melrose into the broadcast booth. His relatable, humour‑filled analysis, combined with his unmistakable mullet, long‑coated suit and goatee, made him one of the most trusted voices in hockey. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman praised him, saying his presence “never failed to boost your love of the game.”

Melrose’s look—mullet, flared‑lapel coat, goatee—made him instantly recognizable on TV and at rinks, turning a simple analyst into a hockey icon.

After a brief stint coaching the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2008‑09, he returned to ESPN, where he stayed until 2023. That year he stepped away after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He passed away at age 70, and ESPN described him as “one of the most distinctive and trusted voices in hockey.”
