Florida DMV breach: What personal data is at risk and how to protect yourself

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) announced on Sept. 4 that its Driver and Vehicle Information Database (DAVID) suffered a data breach. The agency says it quickly stopped the intrusion and no further unauthorized access has been detected.

The criminal group known as ShinyHunters says it stole more than 200,000 driver records from DAVID. Florida officials have not confirmed that number or the exact type of data taken.

FLHSMV’s investigation traced the breach to the login credentials of a single Plant City Police Department employee. Those credentials were stored on the officer’s personal electronic device, allowing the attacker to gain entry.

Because DAVID holds not only basic licence details but also Social Security numbers, birth dates, home addresses and vehicle information, the breach could give thieves the material they need for identity theft.

The state has not disclosed how many records were actually accessed, nor which specific fields were copied. This uncertainty means anyone with a Florida driver’s licence could be at risk.

What can you do? Start by monitoring your credit reports for unfamiliar activity and consider placing a free credit freeze with the three major bureaus. Check your financial statements regularly for unexpected charges.

Strengthen the passwords you use for online accounts, enable multi‑factor authentication, and keep antivirus software up to date. If you receive an email or text claiming to be from the Florida DMV, verify it by visiting flhsmv.gov directly rather than clicking any links.

While the investigation continues, staying vigilant and protecting your personal information are the best ways to reduce the chance that a stolen DMV record leads to identity theft.
