Inside the $8 Banh Mi at a Famous Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City

After 10 years of researching the baguette, the owner of Anan Saigon introduced a new menu with banh mi.

The menu has three types of banh mi, each half the size of a traditional baguette.

The beef banh mi costs VND200,000 and comes with special beef, marinated and slow-cooked for 24 hours.

The other two banh mi cost VND180,000.

The baguettes are served with pate, chili sauce, tomatoes, lettuce, and pickles.

The chef uses Hanoi-style bread because it is smaller and more fragrant than Saigon banh mi.

Chef Peter Cuong Franklin introduces his VND200,000 banh mi in July 2026.

Franklin had a dream of opening a banh mi stall in Saigon. He set up an outdoor cart serving banh mi and coffee.

A local woman tried Franklin’s banh mi because she was curious about the prices.

She said the VND200,000 portion is filling because of the generous amount of beef.

Franklin said the prices might surprise people, but they reflect the quality of the dish.

He thinks banh mi can sell for the same price as a burger because it is just as good.

He wants to make Vietnamese dishes more high-end while keeping their authentic identity.
