British Couple's Cheap Italian Home Has a Big Problem

A British couple bought a cheap Italian holiday home, but they soon found a big issue.

YouTubers Alex and Emma bought a six-room house in Sicily for £35,000. They thought it would cost £45,000 to fix it up.

Now, they worry that the costs will go up and hurt their dream of buying a home in the UK.

The couple, who have two kids, bought the home two years ago but have put their renovation plans on hold.

Emma said, 'Every pound spent on the Sicily house delays our UK dream. We must decide where to spend our next £50,000 or £60,000.'

Alex said, 'Our ultimate dream is to have a house in the UK. We wonder if these dreams are competing with each other.'

The couple wants to fix up the Italian property, including the roof terrace with a great view of the Mediterranean Sea.

They initially planned to spend £45,000, but now they fear the costs could go over £100,000, including the purchase price.

Alex joked, 'The worst thing that could happen is that people who know more than us will ruin our dreams.'

Emma asked, 'Is this becoming a money pit? Could the money be better spent elsewhere? Our friends warned us that the costs could double.'

Some Italian towns sell properties for as little as €1 to regenerate unused buildings and help local communities.

These properties often need a lot of work, as Alex and Emma are finding out.

The couple explained why they chose to buy a property in Sicily.

Emma said, 'Sicily wasn't a random choice. We've always looked for unconventional ways to live and prioritize freedom.'

They love Sicily because it allows them to have a slower pace of life and create family memories.

Alex agreed, saying, 'It can also be a retirement home for us, representing freedom from the usual way of living.'
