Why Singapore Ranks as the World’s Noisiest Country

The Noise-Free Nations Index, created by travel agency Go2Africa, awarded Singapore a noise score of 6.78 out of 10, ranking it as the world’s noisiest country.

The index evaluates seven criteria – population density, tourist arrivals, share of rural land, protected areas, motor‑vehicle density, airport capacity and railway network – to gauge how much ambient sound a traveler is likely to encounter.

With only about 30 % of its territory classified as rural, Singapore offers few quiet refuges, and its high population density further squeezes any remaining calm.

Transport infrastructure amplifies the din: Singapore possesses among the highest global densities of motor vehicles, airports and railway lines. Its MRT system now spans more than 170 stations across six lines, moving over three million passengers daily, while Changi Airport occupies more than one million square metres across four terminals, an area comparable to 156 football fields.

Tourism intensifies the soundscape as well. In 2025 the city‑state attracted 16.9 million international visitors—a 2.3 % increase from 2024—and recorded a historic S$32.8 billion in tourism receipts, swelling activity in hotels, attractions and public venues.
