How Incheon Airport Uses Big Data and AI to Predict Crowds and Streamline Services

Incheon International Airport in South Korea is famous for its smooth passenger experience, thanks to a suite of data‑driven tools that anticipate crowds and keep luggage visible.

The airport’s passenger‑forecast system reads flight‑booking data, predicts congestion for each hour and sends alerts to travelers, achieving an error rate of about 1 %.

In addition, the airport runs a real‑time baggage‑information service that lets passengers track the location of their checked luggage on a mobile phone.

The Airport Council International (ACI), the world’s largest airport association, launched its Customer Experience Accreditation programme in 2019. According to the Seoul Economic Daily newspaper, the scheme evaluates eight areas, including customer understanding, experience strategy, operational improvements, service innovation and collaboration.

ACI and The Chosun Daily reported that Incheon Airport received high marks for its use of big data, its efforts to reduce passenger inconvenience and its adoption of smart technologies such as artificial intelligence.

The airport’s performance was reflected in the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards, where Incheon placed second worldwide after Singapore Changi. It handled 38.39 million international passengers in the first half of the year, a 6.3 % rise over the same period last year.

Looking ahead, Incheon plans a full renovation of Terminal 1 by 2035, with more than 1.77 trillion won (US$129 billion) earmarked for the project.

By leveraging big‑data analytics and AI, Incheon shows how airports can predict crowding, keep luggage visible and continuously improve service, offering a model for smoother travel worldwide.
