Korean Air’s Free Starlink Wi‑Fi Could Change Travel in East Asia

On Sept. 15 Korean Air became the first full‑service carrier in East Asia to offer free Starlink Wi‑Fi, according to The Straits Times. The launch marks a notable step for the airline’s digital services.

The new Wi‑Fi is initially installed on four newly retrofitted widebody aircraft that fly long‑haul routes to the Americas, Europe and Southeast Asia, as well as on several key short‑haul flights.

Passengers in all cabin classes can use the Wi‑Fi at no cost, but Korean Air blocks voice or video calls and live social‑media streaming for security and cabin‑comfort reasons.

Yonhap reported that Korean Air aims to have Starlink on the majority of its fleet by 2027. At the same time, Asiana Airlines will introduce free Starlink‑powered Wi‑Fi on selected flights, starting with nine Airbus A350‑900s and one A330‑300.

Nikkei Asia reported that ZIPAIR Tokyo was the first airline in Asia to adopt Starlink in February, and Singapore Airlines announced it will launch the service beginning in 2027.

For travelers, free high‑speed satellite internet raises expectations for in‑flight connectivity, pushes other carriers to upgrade, and signals a broader push toward fleet modernisation across the region.
