Why the Kate Festival Matters to the Cham Balamon Community

The Kate Festival takes place from October 9 to 11, 2026 at Po Klong Garai Tower in Khanh Hoa Province. It is the biggest yearly celebration of the Cham Balamon community, so learning about it shows how a cultural event can keep a minority’s identity alive.

Thousands of Cham people and visitors gather at Po Klong Garai Tower to perform traditional religious rituals. They open the tower doors, bathe the deity’s statue, dress it in ceremonial garments and pray for good weather, harvests and peace.

The festival also lets the Cham Balamon community reconnect with its cultural roots. Older people perform the rituals while younger people watch and learn, helping customs pass to the next generation. Cultural performances, sports activities and folk games are held at the same time, so visitors can see Cham traditions.

In short, the Kate Festival is both a prayer for good weather, harvests and peace and a chance for the Cham people to keep their heritage strong. The event shows how a vibrant celebration supports community bonds and cultural survival.
