Why Sweet Iced Tea Powers the Mekong Delta

Trà đá đường is literally tea, ice and sugar. The tea leaves are brewed very strongly, giving a dark, tannic liquid. After the brew is sweetened with a generous amount of sugar, it is poured over a mountain of crushed ice, which melts quickly and tempers the sweetness.
There is no official recipe, but the most common preparation follows that pattern: intense steeping, plenty of sugar, and plenty of crushed ice. The balance of bitter tea, sweet syrup, and cold crunch is what locals look for in every pitcher.
According to the elders who grew up in the delta, the drink was already popular in the 1930s and 1940s, although no written record confirms its exact origin. They recall families gathering around pitchers of the sweet tea during long, hot days.
Locals consider trà đá đường a cheap, potent energy drink. The caffeine in the tea stimulates alertness, while the sugar supplies rapid calories. As one elder put it, a sip can make you feel healthy and awake instantly.
Because it is inexpensive and instantly refreshing, the beverage is a default way to hydrate for a wide range of people: rice‑field farmers, street‑market vendors, ferry workers, schoolchildren, and even motorbike‑taxi drivers keep a pitcher nearby.
Nevertheless, not every household embraces it. A high‑school friend told me her parents warned her against drinking it, fearing that the high sugar content could lead to diabetes. Some families therefore limit or avoid the drink.
