Learning from the Okavango: Cross‑border Wetland Lessons for Australia’s River Basins

More than 20 students from Australia, Botswana, the United States and the United Kingdom spent a week in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, gathering data on water quality and wildlife to evaluate the health of the river‑basin ecosystem.
The Okavango Delta covers over two million hectares of islands, floodplains and woodlands. Unlike most rivers, it remains largely free‑flowing and floods each winter, creating a dynamic boom‑and‑bust environment for plants and animals.
Management of the delta is a joint effort by Botswana, Namibia and Angola, a rare example of cross‑border cooperation. In contrast, Australia’s Murray‑Darling and Lake Eyre basins are governed by individual states, which can complicate coordinated action.
Professor Richard Kingsford of UNSW highlighted the strong parallels between the Okavango and Australia’s river systems, noting similar water inflows, vegetation patterns and growing climate‑change pressures. He said these similarities offer concrete guidance for Australian water managers.
By testing water samples and monitoring wildlife, the students produced a snapshot of the delta’s condition. Their findings help illustrate how a free‑flowing, internationally managed wetland can sustain biodiversity, and they suggest practical strategies that could be adapted for the Murray‑Darling and Lake Eyre basins.
