Pope Leo told pilgrims that a small, well‑contained nodule was found in his lung during recent examinations and that it had been detected at a very early stage.
He added that doctors advised it was best to intervene, so the surgery is scheduled for the next few days.
The American Thoracic Society notes that fewer than 5 % of lung nodules turn out to be cancerous, although the risk grows with age, size and smoking history.
Stephen Liu, a lung‑cancer specialist at Georgetown University, said that when a nodule raises enough concern and the patient is fit, surgical removal can give a definitive diagnosis.
The Vatican press office said Leo’s recovery is expected to take about a week, and that he is still planning an 11‑day tour of Uruguay, Argentina and Peru in November.
Leo’s public announcement shows how early detection, professional advice and timely surgery can help leaders stay healthy and keep their commitments.
