Learning from Ho Van Giac: Keeping Ca Dong Heritage Alive
Học hỏi từ Hồ Văn Giác: Giữ lửa di sản Cà Dong

At 72, Ho Van Giac lives in Da Nang and still weaves traditional Ca Dong baskets, plays folk instruments, and performs village rituals. He also teaches these skills to young villagers, showing how one elder can keep a culture alive.
He and his wife, Dinh Thi Dung, learned basket‑weaving as children. Today they are regarded as the most skilled artisans in Long Son, and they regularly teach others while selling their woven products at local events.
Although fewer villagers now know these traditions, Giac’s dedication has led to the formation of a gong and cultural performance club that now has 26 members. The club brings young people back to gong music, dancing and ritual practice.
In recognition of his work, Giac received a certificate of merit in 2025 from the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Quang Nam province for his contributions to national unity. The award highlights how his personal efforts are valued at the provincial level.
Local officials and residents call him the village’s ‘living handbook’ because he explains policies, customs and ceremonies, acting as a bridge between tradition and modern community life. He often accompanies officials to explain new policies in simple language, helping villagers understand and accept changes.
Giac’s lifelong teaching and community involvement demonstrate that active guardianship is essential for cultural continuity. His example reminds us that preserving heritage depends on people who share their knowledge with the next generation.
