Ung thư phổi của Giáo hoàng Leo đặt ra câu hỏi về lãnh đạo Vatican

Pope Leo, the 71‑year‑old head of the Catholic Church, has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma. His recent operation and the uncertainty around his health are significant because they affect the leadership of 1.4 billion believers.
The Vatican said Pope Leo will stay in Rome’s Gemelli hospital for about a week, and all public events are cancelled until Oct 20. Surgeons said the lower lobe of his right lung was removed using a video‑assisted technique.
The pope is the ultimate earthly authority for the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics and has no deputy who can act in his place. According to Vatican statements, when a pope is incapacitated, any decision that needs papal approval is simply put on hold.
He was scheduled to travel on an 11‑day tour of Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from Nov 6‑17, but the Vatican said it was not clear if the trip would still go ahead. Dr Stephen Liu, a lung‑cancer expert at Georgetown University, explained that the final prognosis depends on the cancer’s stage: a small tumor without lymph‑node involvement could be cured by surgery, while a larger or spread cancer would have a poorer outlook.
Because the pope’s health can pause major Vatican decisions and major public events, his diagnosis matters far beyond his personal well‑being. Followers worldwide are watching to see how the Church will manage this unexpected challenge.
