Vietnam is experiencing a noticeable increase in thyroid cancer diagnoses, especially among women. The trend is important because it influences how the public perceives cancer risk and screening needs.

Vietnam recorded approximately 12,200 new thyroid cancer cases and nearly 750 deaths in 2024, placing the disease among the country's ten most common cancers. This makes thyroid cancer a significant health concern for the nation.

Research shows the disease moved from ninth to sixth place in cancer incidence rankings, making it one of the fastest‑rising cancers in Vietnam. At the same time, the gender gap has widened, with women now three to four times more likely than men to be diagnosed.

GLOBOCAN 2022 estimated roughly 6,100 new thyroid cancer cases and more than 850 deaths in Vietnam, highlighting a sharp increase in reported cases compared with the 2024 figures. The contrast underscores how quickly the numbers have grown.

Experts say the rise in reported cases is largely attributable to improved detection rather than a genuine rise in the underlying occurrence of the disease. Better screening tools and more frequent check‑ups are uncovering cancers that might have gone unnoticed before.
