A giant spring‑roll eating contest in Ho Chi Minh City has attracted attention on social media. The challenge highlights how time‑pressured food games can threaten participants’ health, making it important to understand the medical dangers.
The roll is about two metres long and packed with 3 kg of pork, 3 kg of shrimp and 4 kg of vegetables and rice vermicelli. Finishing it in 30 minutes wins VND5 million, while failing costs VND3 million.
Dr. Nguyen Huy Hoang, a doctor with the Vietnam Society of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine, warns that the pressure to eat quickly can cause choking, insufficient chewing and swallowing large pieces of food. These behaviours increase the chance that food blocks the airway.
He also explains that rapid overeating can stretch the stomach dramatically, leading to severe distension. When the stomach wall is stretched, blood flow may be reduced, causing ischemia, tissue death and, in extreme cases, perforation or rupture.
If participants try to vomit repeatedly to keep going, the force can tear the junction where the esophagus meets the stomach, producing blood in the vomit or even a full‑thickness rupture. Likewise, drinking large amounts of water in a short period can cause hyponatremia, with symptoms ranging from headache and nausea to seizures and coma.
The medical evidence shows that eating challenges are not harmless entertainment; they can trigger life‑threatening conditions. Anyone considering such a contest should recognise these risks and avoid pushing their bodies beyond safe limits.
