Qwan Ki Do is a Vietnamese martial art that is now taught in European universities. Its inclusion in Romanian entrance exams makes it a striking case of cultural diffusion, and the story is worth learning.
Master Pham Xuan Tong founded Qwan Ki Do in 1981 in Toulon, France. Early students such as Roberto Vismara helped bring the art to Italy, and the first Romanian university demonstrations took place in the early 1980s.
In Romania, universities teach Qwan Ki Do and the sport is part of entrance exams. The international federation says there are about 40,000 practitioners, more than 500 clubs, and activity in over 37 countries. In early October 2026, Cervia, Italy hosted the World Championships & Junior Championships of Vocotruyen, with about 600 athletes from 45 countries.
Qwan Ki Do’s journey from a French school to Romanian exams shows how a Vietnamese tradition can travel far and become part of European education. It is a clear example of cultural diffusion.
