On October 19, officials from Nha Trang Ward carried out surprise inspections of tourist‑focused eateries and recorded 22 hygiene and safety violations. The findings highlight why food safety remains a concern for both visitors and locals.

The inspections resulted in fines for several well‑known restaurants. Tam Meo Seafood on Tran Phu Street was fined VND2 million after pests were found in its preparation area, while The Local 2 on the same street received a VND10 million fine for cross‑contamination risks and breaking three‑step inspection rules. Dang Van Quyen Ninh Hoa grilled pork roll on Lan Ong Street was fined VND2 million for staff not wearing protective gear, Ha Chicken Rice on Ngo Gia Tu Street was fined VND4 million for not keeping mandatory food samples, and Nguyen Loan Eatery was fined VND12.5 million for operating without a food safety certificate.

In the first nine months of the year, restaurants in Nha Trang were collectively fined VND169 million for safety violations. Local officials say food‑safety enforcement officers are sparse compared with the huge number of businesses they must monitor, making regular checks difficult.

Tracing meat origins is also hard because most supply comes from traditional wet markets, passes through several intermediaries, and veterinary inspection stamps are often lost after butchering. Without clear stamps, authorities cannot verify the meat’s source or quality.

These factors—few inspectors, many eateries, and weak traceability—explain why food‑safety violations are common and hard to control in Nha Trang. Travelers and residents should stay aware of the risks when choosing where to eat.
