The city’s Department of Education and Training is gathering feedback on a draft decision that will create a new type of public school with stronger academic results. For students who want better English skills, the plan is worth watching closely.
Teachers at secondary and high schools must be able to communicate in English, and at least 30% must reach level 4 (B2) on Vietnam’s six‑level framework. Moreover, at least 85% of secondary teachers and 60% of high‑school teachers must hold a master’s or doctorate degree.
Secondary school students will need to achieve B1 English, while high‑school students must reach B2 – a level higher than the B1 requirement of most Vietnamese universities. In addition, every secondary student must win a place at a public high school or international school, and every high‑school graduate must enter a university, college, or study abroad.
Advanced schools already charge more than VND1.7 million (US$66) per student each month, showing that many parents are ready to pay for higher‑quality education. This willingness could influence how the new standards are funded and implemented.
The new standards raise the English bar for both teachers and learners, meaning you will need stronger language skills to succeed. Improving your English now can help you meet school requirements, gain university admission, and access better job or study opportunities abroad.
