Vietnam’s economy is entering a new phase as it signs fresh trade deals and attracts high‑tech investment. For many Vietnamese, this means more job options and potentially higher wages, while consumers may see new products at lower prices.
Vietnam formally signed a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association (VEFTA) after 14 years of negotiations. The deal will cut tariffs on imports such as Norwegian salmon to zero and will open Vietnamese markets for seafood, electronics, machinery and other goods.
The government is targeting up to $1.2 trillion in trade by 2026, and estimates say electronics exports could add about $250 billion to that total. Such growth is expected to create many new positions in factories, logistics and sales, helping raise living standards.
Capital is flowing into electronics, artificial intelligence and semiconductors, turning Vietnam into a growing hi‑tech manufacturing hub. This shift raises the demand for engineers, programmers and other technical staff, opening career paths that did not exist a few years ago.
Tran Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the Export‑Import Department at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, warned that companies must meet stricter environmental, emissions and supply‑chain standards. Those standards are creating a strong need for technical talent, meaning workers with specialised skills will be especially valuable.
In short, the VEFTA agreement and the push for high‑tech manufacturing are set to expand Vietnam’s export market, raise wages and require a more skilled workforce. Your future job prospects and the everyday goods you use could improve as the country meets these new opportunities.
