Singapore’s 37‑year‑old tailor Javin Tan, founder of the bespoke label Common Suits, captured the Trofeo Arbiter in Naples on 17 October, becoming the competition’s first non‑Italian winner. His story shows how a modest start can turn into an international brand.
Tan first fell in love with well‑cut suits while studying finance and marketing at the National University of Singapore. Two weeks after his final exam in 2014, he rented a small booth outside the campus canteen and began selling his own suits, earning about S$1,000 a month.
He taught himself the craft mainly through YouTube videos, learning everything from taking measurements to drafting patterns. After gaining confidence, he hired a few master tailors, and today Common Suits operates ateliers in Singapore, Manila, Jakarta and Bangkok with a team of close to 20 artisans.
Tan promoted his brand online and often took the bus to customers’ homes with his luggage whenever an inquiry arrived. A partnership with luxury fabric maker Loro Piana later gave him the opportunity to enter the Trofeo Arbiter competition.
His winning look was an ocean‑blue double‑breasted jacket made from Loro Piana wool, silk and linen, featuring a microfiber patch for cleaning sunglasses and coloured ribbons that echo sail telltales. Judges praised the impeccable cut, fit and fabric, noting that the functional nautical details made the difference.
Tan’s journey demonstrates that self‑learning, targeted online marketing and strategic partnerships can help a small start‑up grow into an award‑winning global brand. Aspiring entrepreneurs can see a clear example of turning practical steps into real success.
