Why the Bridge’s 10‑Meter Height Helps River Traffic

Ho Chi Minh City has built a new pedestrian bridge over the Saigon River. The bridge’s height is important because it lets ships move under it safely.
The bridge has a vertical clearance of 10 meters, the same as the nearby Ba Son and Thu Thiem Bridges. This 10‑meter space lets large cargo vessels and container barges pass beneath the bridge.
The 10‑meter clearance is higher than the 9.5‑meter maximum set by inland waterway planning rules. Vertical clearance is measured from the designed navigational water level to the lowest part of the bridge. The clearance must be checked during planning, appraisal and approval, and it needs approval from the Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration.
Because the bridge is high enough, river traffic can keep moving while the city gets a new connection across the water. The design shows how careful planning helps both transport and city growth.
