The Mekong Delta is losing many young workers to cities like Ho Chi Minh. Understanding why they leave and what the region plans to do can help you see how local job quality may shape your own career choices.

Many Delta residents would come back home only if they find stable jobs, earn enough to support their families, and have long‑term career development, according to the region’s own statements. Yet a factory worker often prefers Ho Chi Minh City because wages are higher, overtime is available and promotion chances are better, even though it means living far from family.

To stop the outflow, officials say the Delta must create more stable, better‑paying jobs (P1). They propose investing in transport infrastructure, building industrial parks, modernising agriculture with mechanisation, expanding vocational training and improving social‑welfare programmes (P13, P24‑31).

The former Long An Province, now part of Tây Ninh, showed that being close to Ho Chi Minh City, together with a network of industrial parks and good transport links, attracted many manufacturing projects. The same model is suggested for Dong Tháp, Vĩnh Long and Cần Thơ, where raw materials and labour exist but non‑agricultural jobs are scarce (P20‑21).

If stable, well‑paying jobs become available, workers can stay or return without sacrificing their families’ needs, and young people like you will have more local career options. The region’s success will depend on turning these investment plans into real jobs that support households and the local economy.
