Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training has set new standards for university teaching assistants, including AI and foreign‑language skills. These changes will shape how assistants work and how students receive support.

According to the circular, teaching assistants must hold a university degree or higher that is relevant to their position, and they must have a firm grasp of the fundamental knowledge of the courses they are assigned (P3,P4). This ensures they understand the subject matter they help teach.

They are also required to guide and support learners, organize and coordinate teaching activities, and use teaching equipment and facilities effectively and safely (P6). These duties link directly to the day‑to‑day assistance students receive in class and labs.

The new standards add the ability to apply information technology and artificial intelligence, as well as foreign‑language proficiency, to the competency list for teaching assistants (P1,P7). This expands the technical and communication tools they can use when helping students.

Teaching assistants must pursue further training to improve their professional knowledge, skills and teaching methods (P11). Continuous professional development is expected to keep assistants up‑to‑date with teaching methods.

The ministry says that clearer standards and duties will help universities reduce cases where staff are assigned tasks that do not match their capabilities, and will improve professionalism in education and research (P19,P20). This should lead to teaching assistants providing support that better matches their expertise.
