Deep in the peat‑swamp forests of U Minh Ha National Park, stories of giant snakes have been told for generations. The mix of folklore and new science now offers a fresh way to protect the forest and help local people.

Forestry engineer Nguyen Tan Truyen has spent decades gathering oral accounts of these giant snakes. He has also placed infrared and motion‑triggered cameras in the forest hoping to capture visual proof.

Truyen says that keeping the snake legends alive is key to protecting both the forest and the local culture. He believes the stories give people a personal reason to care for the wetlands.

Ca Mau Province plans a “Legendary U Minh Night” tourism experience that will showcase the folklore, wildlife and traditional southern chamber music. The programme is designed to attract visitors and generate extra income for residents.

U Minh Ha National Park has lost more than 300 ha of forest to severe degradation and another about 400 ha are showing signs of deterioration. In response, a scientific research project involving the park, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry and a sponsor has been proposed. The project aims to restore the wetland ecosystems of the park.

By linking ancient legends with modern monitoring and community‑based tourism, the region hopes to safeguard its unique wetlands while improving livelihoods. The combined approach shows how culture and science can work together for conservation.
