The U.S. Coast Guard cutter USCGC Bertholf arrived at Saigon Gateway Terminal in Ho Chi Minh City for a three‑day visit aimed at strengthening ties with the Vietnam Coast Guard. It is the first U.S. military vessel to visit the city in more than 20 years, underscoring a new phase in bilateral cooperation.

The visit coincides with the United States’ 250th independence anniversary and the third year of a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations. U.S. Ambassador Jennifer Wicks highlighted cooperation in trade, healthcare, education, defense and security.

During the three‑day stay, the crew will take part in professional exchanges on shore and joint activities at sea with the Vietnam Coast Guard. Capt. Andrew Pate stressed that joint exercises are essential for improving rescue capabilities and maritime law‑enforcement cooperation.

Both Vietnam and the United States are coastal nations whose maritime industries depend on law‑enforcement agencies to protect people and conduct search‑and‑rescue operations, according to Capt. Pate. He said the two forces have ample opportunities to work together, which helps strengthen regional maritime security.

The Bertholf’s visit demonstrates how a single naval deployment can deepen diplomatic ties, boost cooperation on safety at sea, and reflect broader strategic goals for Vietnam‑U.S. relations. It signals a continued commitment to regional maritime security.
