The Villa Vie Odyssey, a cruise ship that lets people live on board for months or years, suddenly stopped its service. This story shows how the change affects the passengers who paid thousands of dollars for a long‑term stay.
Villa Vie Residences, the company that runs the ship, said fuel price increases from the Iran conflict made the voyage too expensive, so it suspended operations. Because of this, more than 200 passengers who had paid tens of thousands of dollars were forced to disembark in Cambodia.
The ship left the port with no passengers and about 50 crew members, according to Taing Sochitkrishna, head of the Sihanoukville tourism department. Around 100 passengers stayed in Cambodia, and many said they were unsure about the ship’s future and wished they could take more of their belongings.
The Villa Vie Odyssey had been cruising the world for at least 755 days, offering long‑term or permanent residences on board. It was one of only a few ships that provided this kind of living arrangement.
