A new survey shows that artificial intelligence is already changing how young mathematicians think about their futures. The findings are important for anyone studying or working in STEM because they reveal growing uncertainty about academic careers.
The study was carried out between Sept. 17 and Oct. 8 by MIT doctoral students Anna Brandenberger, Hanna Mularczyk and Dora Woodruff, and gathered responses from 268 participants at nearly 60 institutions. Among those who answered a question about career plans, 56% said they had considered changing their plans but were still undecided. Meanwhile, 17% decided not to change and 8% decided to change their plans.
Seventy‑five point five percent of respondents reported that their likelihood of staying in academic mathematics after their PhD or postdoc had dropped in recent months. In addition, 76.3% believed that advances in AI would make it harder to obtain a tenure‑track position, the traditional route to a permanent university job. These numbers suggest that AI is reshaping expectations about long‑term job security in the field.
When asked about using AI for their own research, just over half of the respondents said they did not enjoy the experience. Only 54.8% gave a negative response, indicating mixed feelings about AI tools.
The survey highlights that AI is not only a technical breakthrough but also a factor influencing career decisions for emerging mathematicians. As AI continues to evolve, many young researchers may keep reconsidering whether an academic path remains the best option for them.
