Singapore Airlines announced it will spend more than S$2 billion (about $1.6 billion) to revamp its long‑haul premium cabins. The move is noteworthy because it shows how airlines invest heavily to keep a lead in the high‑end travel market.
The upgrade will introduce larger double‑bed suites in first class and add sliding privacy doors and fully flat beds in business class. Singapore Airlines says the new cabins are designed to match the spending of rivals such as Air France, British Airways and United Airlines, which are also pouring money into premium products. All four travel classes will receive new seats from the second half of 2027.
CEO Goh Choon Phong explained that passenger surveys asked for more comfort, privacy and flexible spaces for work, rest or connecting with loved ones at 30,000 feet. He said the airline studied how customers eat, work and relax while flying.
Despite rising fuel prices that have squeezed airline margins and lifted fares, premium travel has stayed relatively resilient. The programme is funded from a strong cash balance of S$9.1 billion recorded at the end of June, and includes a S$1.1 billion refurbishment plan for Airbus A350‑900s.
The investment will cover 72 aircraft – a mix of retrofitted A350‑900s and Boeing 777‑9 jets that are on order – helping Singapore Airlines maintain its market leadership in long‑haul premium service. By committing billions to cabin upgrades, the carrier aims to meet customer expectations and stay ahead of its competitors.
