Central Vietnam is rapidly upgrading its airports and launching new aviation projects in Gia Lai, Quang Tri, Da Nang and Hue. The goal is to expand passenger capacity, improve international links and support tourism, trade and regional economic growth.
Runway 2 at Phu Cat International Airport in Gia Lai was built with an investment of nearly 3.25 trillion VND (US$126.24 million). It now accommodates Code C aircraft such as the A320 and A321, and can receive Code E aircraft when required.
Quang Tri Airport is being developed through a public‑private partnership that has attracted more than 5.8 trillion VND in investment. The master plan upgrades the airport from a 4C to a 4E classification, allowing wide‑body jets such as the Boeing 777, 787 and Airbus A350, and it is designed for up to 5 million passengers and 25,500 tonnes of cargo each year.
Da Nang International Airport will receive nearly 10 trillion VND for its next expansion phase. The work will raise Terminal T1’s annual capacity to 14 million passengers and add six Code C parking stands, with construction slated to start in August 2027 and finish by early 2029.
Hue’s Phu Bai Airport is planned to handle about 4 million passengers by 2030 and 12 million by 2050, but city leaders expect 6 million travelers in 2026. To meet this demand, they aim to increase the designed capacity to roughly 7 million by 2030 and to build a new Runway 2 together with a synchronized taxiway system before that year.
These large‑scale investments show how central Vietnam is using aviation infrastructure to match fast‑rising passenger numbers and to boost tourism, trade and overall economic development. The region hopes the new runways and larger terminals will turn it into a stronger gateway to the skies.
