Duc Son Pagoda in Hue City runs a home where Buddhist nuns care for vulnerable children. Learning how the community organizes daily life, education and long‑term support shows a practical model of compassion.

Over the past four decades the pagoda has sheltered more than 400 vulnerable children. Today it houses 82 people, ranging from a newborn baby to a 47‑year‑old adult, according to the pagoda’s records.

Each morning the nuns act as mothers: they change diapers, bathe the children, prepare meals, attend to medical needs and provide emotional care. This routine is described by the abbess, Nun Minh Tu, as the core of their mission.

The pagoda arranges daily transportation for children attending mainstream schools and, when they are old enough, gives them electric bicycles to travel more easily. For children with severe disabilities, the pagoda hires teachers to give on‑site lessons suited to each child’s abilities.

Around 20 % of the children go on to college or university, while most finish high school or vocational training and find employment, according to Nun Minh Tu. The shelter’s work is supported by local authorities, the Buddhist Sangha’s executive board, monks, nuns, followers and benefactors.

The daily care, education support and community backing enable the children to grow into independent adults. The story of Duc Son Pagoda demonstrates how a religious community can turn compassion into lasting opportunity.
