Why Alcohol Is a Hot Spot in the Canada‑U.S. Trade War

At 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday, the United States put bans in place on several Canadian products, including alcohol, dairy by‑products, motorcycles and molasses. The measures block those items from crossing the border entirely.
For small producers like James Lester, who runs the Vancouver‑based distillery Sons of Vancouver, the ban means losing the tiny slice of U.S. sales they had built. Lester said the loss is disappointing after months of trying to grow his American customer base.
The numbers show why the ban matters. In 2025 the United States imported $673 million worth of Canadian spirits, far more than the $62.1 million of Canadian wine or $19.2 million of Canadian beer, according to U.S. Census data.
Spirits Canada, the industry association, reports that about 93 percent of all Canadian spirits exports are destined for the United States, making the American market the backbone of the sector.
Economist Moshe Lander explains that alcohol is a “personal identifier,” meaning people link the drinks they enjoy to their cultural identity. That makes booze a politically powerful target in trade disputes.
KPMG lawyer Robert Glasgow adds that consumers can easily replace an imported spirit with a local alternative, so policymakers find alcohol a convenient product to use for retaliation without hurting their own markets too much.
The new bans do not affect large multinational companies that ship bulk whisky for bottling on both sides of the border. Those firms can continue their trade, while smaller distilleries and independent producers feel the brunt of the restrictions.
Because alcohol carries cultural weight and can be swapped locally, it becomes an effective lever in the trade war. Targeting it sends a strong political message while allowing each side to claim limited damage at home.
